CHAPTER TEN

Annie cowered in the corner of the room as she heard keys jangling outside. She was alert and ready to protect herself. The door opened slowly and Fred was stood there sneering at her. “I hope you’ve settled down now. You try anything and you’ll stay in here for days, do you hear me?” Annie’s heart was pounding inside her chest and she knew she had to obey every word this man said or he would attack her again. Fred walked into the room slowly and stood over her. “Stand up, get on your feet.”

“Where are you taking me,” she asked as her body trembled.

“Don’t ask questions, do what I fucking tell you too and you get to live.”

Annie was petrified, her lips were trembling and she was unsure of what was happening. Fred walked her out of the room and led her to another room at the side of the corridor. She could hear voices outside and she knew whatever was behind this door she wasn’t going to like it. Fred snarled at her and came to the side of her face. His warm stale breath circling her nasal passage. “You need to learn to be nice. The girls who are nice always get the work.” Annie swallowed hard as the door was unlocked. There were five girls lay about and they all stood up gawping at Annie as she was pushed inside. Fred stood guard near the door and clicked his fingers over his head. “Linda, sort this new one out for tonight. She’s a nasty bitch so you’ll have your work cut out with her.” The door was slammed shut and Annie was stood there shivering.

Linda looked her over and raised her eyes to the ceiling. “Get over here and let me see if I can sort you out. Melanie, get her something to calm her down, a vodka, with a little sprinkle of something in it.” Linda was around thirty years of age and she looked like she’d had a hard life, her eyes were dark and deep-set wrinkles all over her face and tattoos up her arms. Melanie was rushing about the room and getting the drink ready. She’s been through the induction herself and knew if she stepped out of line Linda would have knocked ten tons of shit out of her. The vodka was poured into the glass and Melanie reached over to the small table nearby and grabbed a small bag of powder. She emptied the full contents into the glass and used her index finger to stir it around. Linda looked the girl up and down and gave her a long jumper. “Here, get this on you look perished.” At last, a friendly face, someone who cared about her, Annie thought. Her teeth were chattering together as she slipped the garment over her head.

Melanie was here now and she passed Annie the spiked drink. “Why am I here, what’s going to happen to me?”

Melanie was about to answer her when Linda reached over and slapped her hand over her mouth.
